SPINUS
Graece ςπίνος, male ἀκανθὶς redditur Gazae, hôc tamen nomine non carduelem indigitari, sed aviculam parvam, quam Galli Serenum hodie vocant, contendenti. Fringilla namque ςπῖνος Graecorum est, quae in urbibus ut plurimum aestate degit et supra tecta domorum cantillat. Eam cum turdis venum exponebant Graeci, unde ςπίνους et κίχλας Comici saepe iungunt. Inter quos Aristophanes. 7. ςπίνους obolô vendi dicit,
Ὅτι συνείρων τοὺς ςπίνου πωλεῖ καθ᾿ ἑπτὰ ὀβολοῦ,
Εἶτα φυσῶν τὰς κίχλας.
Inter aves enim mensis commendatas etiam Spinus, apud Pollucem, et Stobaeum in Excerptis c. 55. Galli hodie pincionem vocant; ςπῖνος namque et ςπίνθος idem, unde σπινθίον, ex quo spinthio, pinthio, pincio etc. Sed et sic quidam vocâsse videntur minimum passerculi genus, quem τρωγλίτην et τρωγλοδύτην Graeci vocant.
